Legal Education and Employability
Abstract:
Legal profession has seen significance changes in last decades. There are many new job avenues for future lawyers and made traditional lawyer’s job redundant. However, legal education is still the same which has affected the employability of young law graduates.
Today, students are not taught law subjects that would ensure jobs. Rather the law schools still focus on theoretical subjects which require rot learning.
In the globalised world where FDI, cross border mergers, commercial use of Space have become daily news. Both in private and government sector foreign investments are encouraged. Ever domestic company is collaborating with foreign market leaders. However, there is hardly any law school where these subjects are taught as separate individual subjects.
This practise has caused a generation of lawyers who remain alien to job opportunities in these fields. It not only hampers the growth of individual lawyer but also makes entire job market monopolised. As a result, the entire job ecosystem becomes inefficient.
Apart from these, we also face challenges from the modern technology like Artificial Intelligence which would further reduce the demand of lawyers in the market.
The only way forward is to immediately inculcate subjects which would ensure jobs. Law schools should focus on the subjects which are new and innovative and develop methods for teaching them which would make students ready for industry.
