Dr. Joseph LEE – Reader in Corporate and Commercial Law, University of Manchester Law, UK

Dr. Joseph Lee is a reader in corporate and financial law at the University of Manchester School of Law. He is author of the book Crypto-Finance, Law and Regulation: Governing an Emerging Ecosystem and the editor of the book Data Governance in AI, FinTech and RegTech. He has written extensively in the area of fintech law, including on the application of blockchain in the energy markets and the deployment of AI/data analytics to enhance ESG. His forthcoming monograph explores the use of DAOs in Web3 as an innovative form of collaboration and sharing. He is a member of the LawTech Advisory Council of the Astana International Financial Centre and co-lead of the Manchester LawTech Initiative. He is the programme director of University of Manchester Worldwide LLM in International Commercial and Technology Law. Dr Lee is Principal Investigator of a funded research project with Professor Jyh-an Lee, Centre for Legal Innovation and Digital Society of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Principal Investigator of the British Council Going Global Project on Digital Governance with Professor Dai Long, Director of International Economic Law, Chinese University of Political Science and Law; and a co-convenor of the Forum of Innovative Finance and Digital Governance with Professor Aline Darbellay, University of Geneva. He is currently developing a policy paper for digital assets in accounting, funded by the UK Research Council, with the UK Endorsement Board of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. He has held a number of visiting positions including at KU Leuven, the Judicial Academy of Thailand, Tokyo University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and National Taiwan University. He is also an attorney-at-law of New York State. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French and Italian.
