Observations on Women In Law- A Cross-Jurisdictional Analysis

Abstract:
Across countries, we have often observed that despite the increasing portion of female law students, the number of female partners do not increase a lot. This is supported by statistical research by McKinsey & Company which shows that “for every 100 women promoted to partner, 141 men are promoted”. Being lucky to witness and be involved in the early stages of Women in Law Hong Kong, and honoured to serve as vice-chairlady of 3 Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers Limited Committees, and the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Cross Straits Four Regions Committee for consecutive years, I am happy to share my observations and research on women in law in United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, of which I have passed the qualifying legal exams in. I will discuss the unique problems women law students and lawyers face as they climb up the career ladder as some of them try hard to balance the competing roles of employee, wife and mother, as well as the current level of support offered to them. I will also explore different career paths and flexible work programmes available to women and suggest ways in which more help can be provided to them starting from law school, to the firm level to government and societal support.
