Abstract:
Legal education has acknowledged constant evolution of legal profession because of rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) i.e., ability of a computer programme to think and perform tasks. In this regard, Prof. Amani Smathers introduced the concept of a ‘T- shaped’ lawyer i.e., a legal professional who has extensive knowledge about his/her discipline and a breadth of knowledge in other disciplines. Lawyers take birth from law schools and hence it is imperative that modern legal education inculcates concept of AI to law students in post Covid era. For instance, review and examination of the documents was hitherto routinely performed by lawyers, but this activity has been automated in many law firms with the assistance of different software. Hence it would be appropriate to instil in law students, a basic understanding of AI and its impact on law in post Covid era. This would enable them to focus their faculties for providing maximum value to client post Covid. However it should also be noted that AI should be treated as complimentary rather than a replacement for legal practice and classroom teaching. It is also imperative to understand that lawyering fundamentally involves people to people interface. Whilst law students may benefit from AI training, it is crucial for law schools to teach emotional intelligence to mould them into holistic professionals who analyse various legal issues with help of AI and also exhibit human creativity and empathy for clients.
