Abstract:
Previous research has demonstrated that human rights education has an essential role in promotion of human rights and access to justice in societies. However, human rights are still facing serious challenges most of which arise from lack of effective educational methods. Our research shows that legal clinics of law schools can play an important role in dealing with the challenges and enhancing human rights education. Clinical human rights education is an active, participatory, comprehensive and multi-layers method. Legal clinics are engaged in education of human rights issues and access to justice in practical and clinical education method. This kind of education covers law students, people, professional groups, law professors and lawyers. But, legal aid counsels appointed by National Legal Service Authority and District Legal Service Authorities, doesn’t seems to provide satisfactory response to poor litigants in India. Pro bono services seem to be most difficult and challenging in Pre-Covid and Post-Covid world. In such conditions, the law clinics supported by law schools and effective clinical legal education will play substantial role in bringing legal transformation in the area of legal aid services. There is necessity to include the professional skill development programmes within the scheme and syllabus of legal education especially in developing states like India. It will be interesting to see how technological developments like artificial intelligence, incubation centres and legal start-ups will play major role in bringing paradigm shift in legal education and legal services provided to poor & needy litigants.
