Asia is the most financially and commercially dynamic region in the world. However, its rapid development has also promoted a similarly dynamic increase in illicit trades. The region’s dark side includes a long tradition as a trafficking centre for various illicit trades including drugs, money, firearms, antiquities and heritage, and people among countless other activities. The ongoing war against these nefarious activities and the criminal organisations involved has been a constant challenge for governments, authorities and stakeholders. The victims of these activities are often among the most vulnerable in societies, which themselves are struggling to cope with the destabilizing effects of these illicit trades. These effects also have significant human rights implications.
The aim of the Conference is to bring together experts from various disciplines and fields of study, both academic and professional, to share their expertise and research. The various papers are expected to highlight not just individual areas of trafficking, but also the overlaps and interdependencies between them, and the complicity of the various organisations and individual players involved. This shared research will be used to develop a framework and guidelines for regulating and policing the illicit trades in Asia, and promote human rights. The structure of the Conference is to build a network of like-minded experts and produce the first Handbook on Organised Trafficking and Illegal Trades in Asia and similar publications.
